Re: Distributor Tach Gears
Terry,
If it is your original distributor without the relief hole, and you are having trouble with the tach drive, you need to also check the gear on the shaft as well as the distributor housing for wear caused by the old gear bearing on the housing.
Here's a picture of mine (67) showing the wear of the housing with a bunged up shaft gear. You can feel the gear with your finger, if it is bunged up.
Simply replacing the gear with a bunged up shaft gear or worn housing, will result in the new gear becoming also bunged up shortly.
Most of the overhaul kits reguire that the housing be drilled for installation of a set screw, or a bronze or plastic button to hold the new gear in position.
I had to change the shaft on mine but was able to avoid drilling the housing by fitting a plastic button in the wear cavity created by the old gear.

Re: Distributor Tach Gears
If originality is key, here is what I did to keep the modifications inside the distributor without compromising the housing's appearance.
When I rebuilt my tach drive, I modified the replacement brass button by nipping off three quarters of the nipple comming off the back of the button and partially drilling into the housing making sure NOT to blow through.
After dry fitting the components I epoxied the button in place, lubed the gears and shaft and re-assembled.
I now have a modified tach drive that still looks original to the gaze.
Just my two pennies worth.
