I would like to hear from anyone that has done the 2004r swap. I have been researching it and it sounds like it can be a problem getting it to work right. I would like to know if you are happy with the change and all of the problems and solutions for getting it installed and operating properly before I decide to do the swap. Also getting a 2004r seems to be expensive. I have checked the archives and it sounds like some of you have done it with absolutely no problems. Tell me how and if you would do it again. Thanks

If you are buying a complete rebuilt automatic transmission from a major shop with no core it will be expensive.
Getting it to work right should be no problem for anyone with experience with 200R4 or 700R4 installations. Ask local people about shops that do that kind of work and go talk to the shop.
I know one 67 with a 200R4 and the owner is satisfied with it.

The 200R4 will work very well in a street machine such as a Corvette. They build these transmissions for drag vehicles. There is a '65 with one in it. 383" with about 400 hp that has one in it. Absolutely NO problems. I would go with a lockup transmission for a street cruiser. Gives you a good low gear for performance and a lockup converter for fuel mileage

Paul,
I know a transmission shop that has the same opinion. That tells me they probably do not do performance transmissions. The parts are available to build it to work well behind a small block Chevy, especially a cruiser. If you plan a little more horsepower it just costs more money.

2004r swap for pg in '61
Thanks for the feedback. My '61 is puny 230hp. It sounds like it is a good swap if I could find someone to do it or find a core. I do not understand why it is not just a very simple swap for the shops around here. I would sure like a detailed explanation of what is needed for swap. Art Carr says non lockup is the way to go and will cost from $1400-$2000 shipped.- Top
