65 Hubcaps- In Caveat Emptor

Just thought I would inform all that I purchased repro hubcaps last year at Carlisle trying to gain more judging points - I had repro knockoffs - and having acquired correct K-H rims, weights, and valve stems plus Firestone bias ply tires thought I would get full credit.
Much to my dismay, the judges immediately detected the hubcaps as repros stating they were chromed and not stainless steel - so i lost all the points again -even though the spinners were marked Genuine GM Restoration Parts. Will no be trying to sell the repros and find some decent "driver" hubcaps to gain a few points.

It maybe that the hubcap is stamped carbon steel rather than stainless, but even the origial stainless ones are chrome plated. Without a magnet, this alone would not be an decernable difference.

Once again I demonstrate my ignorance. The judge had no magnet to test them - was just using visual observation. Out of curiosity I later tried a magnet and it doesn't "stick" -

So, back to the question of whether I should have gotten some points for these hubcaps, I guess. I thought since the spinners said " Genuine GM restoration parts" I would have gotten some points for those but they also received a full deduction.

Just to add this and then I'll shut up about it. I just checked the judging sheets and the comment re: the wheelcovers was "Repro wheel covers - should be polished stainless, not chrome." Re: the spinners "Center too deep". Full deduction for both items resulted.

If judged again should I assert the repro hubcaps are worth at least some points ?

It's hard for us to "re-judge" a car without being there or seeing it, but my thought is that your judge does not appear to have been completely familiar with the original configuration of the parts nor the "5 axis" judging guidelines.

I would suggest doing nothing other than preparing yourself with the knowledge of the part, original configuration and the 5 axes of judging so that you can rightfully (and respectfully) challenge the next judge if they show the same lack of familiarity with the process.

Houston ..we have problem.....

A full deduct requires "approval" from the team leader. Unless your car isn't a 65, I would find a full deduct extremely disturbing.

Follow Patricks advice and spool up on the judging process as defined in the "white book"

Sorry Noel,

Looks like the "white book" may now be a "blue book". I'm speaking of the Corvette Judging Reference Manual availible in the NCRS bookstore. This book provides all the standard deductions and defines the 5 axis judging process used by our organization.
