    Judging question: re-dyed dash pads

Can anyone tell me if there are any point deductions for re-dyed dash pads for a '65?

    Thanks.

Re: Judging question: re-dyed dash pads

I know that two years ago, the finanical deduction for the dye job on the '66 CV 425 =ed about $70K when the car was "laundered". Probably "pocket change" for you.........

How long is a piece of string?

If the dye job is perfect in all respects it will therefore be undetectable and no deduction will be made.If the job is not perfect, then deductions will be made accordingly.

Not really an answer, but the question is pretty vague.

        And I don't understand Loren's answer either.

          Clarification of my question

Let me be more specific. I visited a Corvette shop today. The owner showed me an interior that he just completed. It was beautiful. I commented on how nice the red dash pads and console looked. I asked how he achieved such a beautiful look. It looked perfect. The shop owner showed me a can of red dye sold by Volunteer Vettes. The can reads that it's good for vinyl, plastic, fiberglass and metal. The original dash pads and console that the shop owner showed me looked new. Although my original red dash pads are complete and undamaged, they are faded. I would prefer to re-use my original dash pads, but there is a fade problem. The rattle can dye worked beautifully on the car I saw today. I'm considering using that same product on my restoration (rather than using repro pads), but I want to know what the downside would be (possible point deductions) if the judges detect re-dyeing of the dash pads.

            Tony,

I suspect the deduction may be nominal, and that's only if it is detected. At most, as it is only one of the five aspects involved in judging a part, it would lose 20% of originality points.

You may want to practice on a non-essential piece of dash from another old junkyard car before you try your own pads, but don't be too afraid.

As you may know, high humidity may result in a "milky" haze on the surface when you spray the dye. Be sure to have the parts in a low humidity environment over night and then spray in that same environment.

I have tried these dye's on differant parts, and had mixed results. The main problem I had was peeling after awhile.I would go with the new pad if you want the job done right.Tom

Dash pads need to be wiped down with a degreaser or the paint will not stick. One reason for re-dying is the parts all have the same shade. Others will say the match was not perfect originaly. I would dye the originals as most reproduction parts will have the grain or some other area that will cause the judge to take a deduction.

Now if I were judging, I would know instantly, because those different items were done in different materials and different formulations the factory. You would have never found a dash that completely matched. I know they look nice, but they aint correct.

I believe that the factory dyed interior components in some cases. I believe that some gunmetal interior components, at least in '68, started out black. My '67 has a black door panel that appears to have started out blue, it's car number 21,526, a very late car. Lots of folks know this green car and it's believed that the door panel has not been off the car.

Re: Judging question: re-dyed dash pads

I definitely want to keep my original pads. They have no rips or damage. They're just faded. Given the constructive comments in here, I think I'll take a shot at dying my original dash pads. I'll think about finding a way to show some contrast between the re-dyed pads and the repainted center dash console. That shouldn't be too difficut. If I don't like the results, I can always change them out since I'll be pulling the dash anyway.

                          Thanks for the helpful comments.

                            Tony,

I re-dyed my red dash pads and door panels in my 1964 Corvette back in 1981 with excellent results. The car was judged at the NCRS national meet in 1984 and received no originality deduction for the dash pads or door panels. The car was judged again in 2004 again receiving no originality deduction for the dash pad or door panels. As for the comment made in an earlier post about the dye peeling, I've never had one problem with peeling and both the door panels and dash still look great. The key to a good job is getting them clean and using the vinyl prep on the pad before spraying them.

                            Go for it!!!

                            Best Regards,
