    1968 Tank sticker question

Okay, I know how the 69 tank stickers basicaly work with regards to matching the hand written number on it to the car's VIN. From cars that I have looked at on the net and in person, the 68's seem to follow the same basic rule with the hand writen number repeating itself every 500 units as well. However, the 68's always seem to have the hand written number 11 or 12 numbers less than the VIN.

For example, a 69 VIN of 24189 would probably have a writen number of 189.

Two examples of a 68 VIN and sticker though look like this... VIN 04760, tank sticker 249. 760-249=511 so this written number is 11 units ahead of the VIN.

Example two... VIN 13140, tank sticker 128. 140-128=12 so this written number is 12 units ahead of the VIN.

I had two other 1968 examples but they show the same pattern. You see they do follow the 69 pattern and repeat every 500 units as well but tend to be 11 or twelve units ahead of the VIN.

Question is, does anyone know why the 68 tank stickers seem to be numbered this way as opposed to how the 69's are numbered and even though the 68's seem to be 11 or 12 units "off" is this a reasonably safe way to match a 68 tank sticker to it's VIN. It just seems funny that the few 68's that I have checked follow this 11 or 12 unit pattern...

    Thanks,

I don't know the why part but my 68 does match your theory.

Vin xx471 - number on tank sheet 459

      Greg,

Mine is consistent as well (699-186=13) though I haven't the slightest reason why...

Did you end up finding that 435hp car yet?

Ya that is funny... It would be interesting to see why the 68's are "off" by 11-13 numbers but the 69's are for the most part the same.

No I never did get that 435hp vert(or 400 A/C vert) so I'm still looking. I put an ad on the Corvette Forum that got me a few leads but nothing that panned out. It's really hard to find a decent car given my location up here and the only people that I "know" that are into Corvettes are on this forum so the word of mouth thing isn't doing to well either. Can be really frustrating but then again I really don't "need" one just yet so I have time....

What did you end up finding?

THE KEY IS TO NOT FEEL PRESSURED...BE PATIENT AND KEEP LOOKING...I DID NOT "NEED" TO FIND ONE EITHER...BUT BE READY...

What did you end up finding?

I BELIEVE WE WERE BOTH INTERESTED IN THAT L89 IN CINCINNATI...I WAS STILL CONTEMPLATING IT WHEN I CAME ACROSS AN L89 ON EBAY, OF ALL PLACES, 15 MINUTES FROM ME OVER THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND I JUMPED ALL OVER IT...A VERY NICE CAR WITH A TANK STICKER AND A SREAMIN' DEAL...SO THEY ARE OUT THERE AND, AS USUAL, SOMETIMES UNDER YOUR NOSE...NOT ONLY DO YOU NEED TO KEEP LOOKING BUT YOU NEED TO BE READY TO POUNCE WHEN YOU FIND IT AS ANYTHING THAT'S A DEAL WON'T LAST LONG...

that's amazing, how do you guys figure these things out? my 68 is vin 26917 - 404 = 513. so i guess there is a way to pretty well tie the tank sticker to the car.
