Re: Related 64 Information
64 serial number 134 has the had written number of 129. Actually written over 128, but the number is other places also. This early in 64 ,there must not have been any AOS bodies yet, the body number is 75 with no A or S prefix. So we have 134 cars and 129 bodies. How could that have happened? 5 pilot cars maybe?

Re: 1968 Corvette Order Copies (Tank Sheets)
Excellent info Al, Thanks!
Couple questions though...
"Unique only for 1968, once production got under way, the gap varied widely, although at a rate of one single number at a time, from as little as 9, to as many as 16 behind the VIN. (Example, VIN 194378S418455 - written number 433. difference 12) In 1968 production, written numbers do not exceed VINs when applied to the 500 cycle rule. Beginning in 1969 and thereafter, the sequence between hand the written number and VIN is ALMOST universally on target. 1968 is the last year that saw continuously evolving gaps between the written sequence number and the VIN. "
So basicaly for 1968, right out of the gate this number was 9 digits off and I would suspect that would occur at the beginning of the hand written number sequence with the 16 digits off occuring as this number approached the 500 mark?
Do you know why the 68's had this evolving gap where as the 69's were pretty much on target?
Thanks- Top

Re: 1968 Corvette Order Copies (Tank Sheets)
My 68, 25941, has 428 written on the build sheet. I calculate that to be 13 "off". Does that make sense? Also, the marks on the body are "435". I have never understood the relation between them. Is there any?
Thanks for the great info, Al.

This has been discussed before...
John Hinckley gave a nice tutorial that's in the archives. The job number (1-500) was issued when the car's build was authorized. The VIN number wasn't assigned until the critical final sub-assy components (body, chassis) were scheduled onto the final line.
Yes, there's some kind of 'correlation' simply because the job sequence ran from 1-500 and the VIN sequence ran in even 1000 lot quantities + production was 'rather' regular. BUT, some car components ran into problems and went to repair booth(s) along the way. Plus, the body's time through the paint booth was variable (cycled until QA/QC was satisfied).
So, there is NOT a rigid, 1:1, correlation between job number and VIN. It seems we repeat this thread once or twice a year....- Top
