    Re: C-3 Battery Judge

Denny, This battery is plastic, with the small Delco circle embossed on the case. It does have cracks in the case and wiil not hold fluid. Also the caps are the individual type(one with the "Delco Eye"),not three and three. Didn't have a chance to call Terry's reference, perhaps today. The battery is in the trailer, and I will be happy to bring and show it to you in Marlborough. Thanks for your interest. Oh, my car is a Feb 2 build date.

        Re: Thank you Kevin!

Denny, Spoke with Tom, According to him it is not correct for my car. The date code is very close but as posted earlier Corvettes used R89S or R89W. This battery is O=1970 M=Dec. N=plant(loc. unknown) 18=day. So it belongs to a Chevy (Camaro,Chevelle,Nova etc.) built early Jan. as the dates seem to be approx. two weeks before build dates. Tom mentiond that GM probably didn't spend on recharging. All in all, it will be a good dust collector in the garage. I'll bring it along for the ride north, so anyone interested may take a look at it.

            Re: Thank you Kevin!

While the battery may not be CORRECT for your car, you did receive it from a former owner, and the date is close enough that I virtually guessed your car's build date.

In my opinion, the chances are good that it IS the ORIGINAL battery that came in the car. It's less likely, someone is going to go looking for an original Delco battery, even a Camaro/Chevelle/Nova battery, with a date that works with car...regardless of how NCRS thinks, the rest of the Corvette loving world just does not think like that.

Here's the deal: When General Motors built these cars, I'm sure it never occurred to them to worry about someone thirty or forty years later determining the part used was INCORRECT. They were pushing iron out the door with a set of engineered parts to make it work reliably for a long time, and nothing was going to get in the way of that process. In those rare instances where they were "running out" of one of those parts, they selected another "engineered part" that would work, and placed orders from another division for that one.

Substitution of other GM muscle car parts on Corvettes has happened before, and a battery is probably one of the easiest to subsitute. It's the original battery IMO...for reasons to remain forever in the mists of time.

                Jack,
I also believe that Tom said one of the above later changed to I, V=Olathe, KS I think it was. One other item that Tom mentioned was the small sticker on the top, assembly line batteries had, as this one does a 3/4" x 2 3/4" sticker, and that over the counter batteries had a punch out type sticker.
