    Re: Bought a POS...

    Jim,

Sorry to hear its a POS.

If you decide to check out HF, here is a website for their sale ads.

The 12T and 20T are currently on sale ($119.99, $189.99)in the ad. Also, check for their 15% off coupons by getting on their email list. The latest 15% coupon expired yesterday though. There will probably be another one in a few weeks.

      Re: Bought a POS...

Thanks Tim....yep I know what cha mean about the lateral slop resulting from the sliding press bar. The Torin has at least a half inch side-to-side. I noticed the heavier 20 ton Torin uses a different design with concentric support arms between the top-frame and jack plate (press bar) assuring lateral stability. Does the HF bottle jack attach to the press bar...or...does it simple sit freely on top of the bar? Also, is the HF ram a round simply welded to the bottom of the press bar? If so, is that round accurately welded perfectly in-line with the vertical press force?...

      Thanks

Thanks David...just signed up with HF email. Is the coupon good even for so called "sale" items?

Jim - The bottle jack does just sit freely on press bar. The jack has a pretty wid footprint, so it's never tried to slip off or move sideways. Each stroke on the handle only moves the ram about 1/16" so you will either do a lot of pumping or stack baseplates to minimize that. The bottom shelf is easily adjustable (but heavy!) in 6" increments via a pin on each side.

Yes, the ram is welded to the bottom of the press bar but it is true. It's about 1" in diameter.

            Jim,

Yes, the coupon in the stores, even on sale items. Also, if you happen to find an item on sale in their mail order catalogs that is not on sale in the retail stores, they will honor the mail order price if you show it to them.

              Jim,

I meant to say: yes, the 15% coupon is accepted in the stores on sale items too.

Also, here is a link to the last coupon that expired yesterday.

Sometimes, just when the coupon takes effect, the sale price on item you want has expired. So, you kind of have to take your best shot. Hitting both at the same time is great though.

Re: Buying Shop Press....12 ton or 20....?

For all the Canadians out there with access to Princess Auto, they are currently featuring a 12 ton press for 99.99 plus many other things which if nothing else, make good garage sale fodder!

We all need more STUFF ! Just ask George Carlin.

My H.F. 20 ton also has the slop associated with the carriage assembly, but once the machine is lined up to the work piece and a strain is taken, the "slop" becomes mute.

It paid for it'self on the trailing arm work alone not to mention the other garage work it's done.

Even when I couldn't get the metering rods back into the carb I rebuilt, just a couple of pumps of the jack handle on "ole orange" and they went right in slick as you please.
