    Rebuild of old floor jacks

This is just an FYI posting. Floor jacks today are generally made in China and are quite cheap (both in price and construction), and many of the companies making hydraulic jacks have thrown in the towel, and are importing inexpensive products from China in order to stay in business at all. Given this, your old possibly worn out floor jack might be worth rebuilding. I have an older Sears floor jack made probably around 1980 or so, and is model number 328.12001. This jack was actually made in Japan, but was very though in construction, was quite well made, and cost just less than $200 25 years ago. Recently it started leaking internally and wouldn't hold a load. A check with Sears revealed that parts are no longer available from them.

Long story short, I searched many places to find that Tri City Hydraulic Jack Service in Tampa Florida (813-232-1280) has parts for old floor jacks. I spoke with "Joe" and they apparently have obtained or have put together themselves repair kits for a variety of old floor jacks, including many Sears models. Joe was very knowledgeable about floor jacks in general, and was able to describe to me fully how to go about rebuilding my jack and installing the repair kit. It was not hard at all, and now my jack works like new for less than the price of a cheap China import!

I was able to contact Larin through their website for a seal kit for a jack I bought 15 year ago at Price Club/Costco. Less than $7.

But I also bought a new Craftsman aluminum jack when the Larin started leaking and guess which one I grab first now. What a difference!
