    Correct tire for 64

    Hi guys,
I am nearing the end of my resto( if that's possible) Idid all the body work and painted the car myself. I am putting the car back to as original as possible. I have original steel wheels which I sandblasted and repainted. Any suggestions as to the best tires? I want to put whitewalls because I believe that to be original. Thanks

Are you trying to look original for judging or do you want a nice comfortable ride out of the tires? Hard to beat new radial T/A's for ride

      Charles,

Whitewalls are reproduced faithfully (except for the DOT markings) as Goodyear Power Cushions, Firestone Deluxe Champion, BF Goodrich Silvertown. US Royal (Uniroyal) may have been used also, and all as 7.75-15 bias ply as original. I recommend Goodyears, sold by Kelsey Goodyear, as most of the judges seem to prefer the Goodyear rubber. Goodyears are a bit more expensive than the other brands, but might save you some aggravation on the judging floor.

        Charles,

If you plan on driving the car at all (and I am assume you plan on getting it judged) I would recommend going with Diamond Back tires. They use an OEM radial tire and can put the correct width white wall on it for you. You will loose the standard deduct for originality, but should get 100% of condition. Also, if you drive the car to the event, you will more than make up the points lost and enjoy the ride doing it!

Great company to deal with and I wouldn't hesitate recommending them to you.

Diamond Back Classic Tires is an online tire shop that creates custom tires for classic cars. Diamond Back creates white wall tires, redline tires, blueline tires, goldline tires and other vintage tires for pre-1976 vehicles including Corvettes, Mustangs, prewar cars, postwar cars, European cars and more.

          Edit

The proper tire size for 1964 was 6.70-15. In 1965 all tire sizing was changed, and Corvette went to a 7.75-15, the size which superseded 6.70-15 under the new standard. Up to 1964, tires were sized with aspect ratios comparable to a 90 series by today's standards. In 1965, the aspect ratio went to a comparable 80 series.

Thanks for all the info. I am not really planing on having the car judged. I really want it as a driver but still want it to look pretty original.I am pretty sure it would not stand up to the picky judging standards although I have attempted to keep everything as original as possible. I was looking at more modern tires which have different size designations. I think that a 205/75 15 would fit but I'm not sure. I want a whitewall but I am not so picky as to it's width.

              Charles -

205/75 radials will work fine, and the car will be MUCH more enjoyable to drive. Diamond Back Tires can put any width whitewall you want on just about any radial you want.
