Re: Play the Game, Dr. Bairds' Restorer Article
Roy,
I agree, a great article with a great perspective of these great cars. Dr. Baird hit home with me too. Bob....Thank You!
I am presently in the dilema regarding the original(but very rough) 62 I got a few months ago. I have been taking 100's of photos, documenting everything, researching and learning as much as I can. I am so reluctant to to start taking it apart. Unfortunately, this car was neglected and was being sold for "junk" before I got it. It was owned by an eccentric who used brushed on latex house paint to keep it nice! He had the bumpers under his bed since 1972 so no one would steal them. Duct tape holding the seat covers together. NOS parts bought in 78 in his closet never installed, etc, etc. I believe I saved it from disaster.....the part-it-out profit game or the infamous big dollar resto-mod market.
I have been obsessed with authenticity with my cars. Budget has limited this with my 59, but the 62 is a different story. I decided this original motor 62 will get the full reincarnation. I have been acquiring every nos part I can find to preserve it. Yes I am obsessed, but we all need a passion in life and preserving my automobiles' history will be mine. It has to be restored the way it came to me, JM correct or not. I don't care if I loose points if something doesn't match the JM. If I believe something is original and hasn't been changed I will keep it that way. The JM is a invaluable reference, but there are so many possible variations we haven't learned about yet it is very possible that we may just be cloning our cars to match the knowledge of our present research just to get the most points. There is still so much to learn.
