    ECS C3 1978 L-48

Service manuals call for the replacement of the ECS filter in the canister mounted in the engine compartment behind the driver side front wheel (part of the emissions system). I believe mine needs replacement because there is a strong smell of gas from the canister when I am lying under the car. Are these filter available and does anyone have advise for installation?

That's a generic filter used on millions of GM evap cannisters. I bought a Purolator at Pep Boys for about a buck and a half. It's identical to the original - a woven white fiber mesh.

I suspect the odor might be from something other than a bad filter. Check ALL the rubber hoses (and connections) on the Evap system. One might be broken or cracked.

Same thing happened on my Cosworth Vega. The vapor line from the tank consists of rear and front pipe sections that are joined by a short piece of rubber hose at the cowl just above the trans tunnel and rubber hoses to the tank and cannister nipples.

It turned out that the connecting hose at the cowl was cracked - just ahead of a spring clamp, so it was hard to see. The location exposes the hose to a lot of heat, so it finally gave up the ghost. All the other hoses were fine.

Check your CSM to find all the hoses (and connections) and check them all very carefully. If none have ever been changed, they are nearly 30 years old, and some may be exposed to a lot of heat, which deteriorates organic materials.

The filter is available under GM #7026014, aka Delco #A478C. It can also be purchased from many aftermarket sources as Duke mentioned.

In case you find that you need to or desire to replace the entire canister, it's also available from GM under GM #17113145, aka Delco #215-150.
