1962 Temp Gauge calibration

In trying to calibrate/verify my temp gauge reading I have used a laser thermometer. The highest reading comes from the thermostare housing. My question is has anyone verified that this temp (assuming the laser gauge is acurate) is representive of the actual engine temp?

You're after the engine coolant temp and not the temp of some particular casting that could be far enough removed from the coolant to climb somewhat above the coolant temp. Typically, the thermostat cover and the coolant temps will be pretty close to each other, but some shoot the bottom side of the upper rad hose since it's rubber and rather non-conductive with coolant flowing in a constant bath inside...

Considering the rather loose precision of the typical temp gauge system, you're close enough for a decent reading!
