    C2 rear wheel bearings

I've been going through the mechanics of my '67 purchased last year to be sure that there are no problems. I've replaced some items that I thought were in need of attention (driveshaft and halfshaft u-joints) and was wondering if it is necessary to grease the rear wheel bearings. My service manual says that the bearings are "lifetime greased" but I don't know if Chevrolet anticipated people still driving these cars forty years down the road.
Should they be greased regularly and if so, how often? I've disassembled and rebuilt the bearing assemblies of my 1966 and 1965 (restoration still in process)but have yet to re-pack the bearings while still in the car. I've seen the grease fitting that slips over the axle stub and is held in place with the nut assembly. Is it appropriate to use this type of bearing greasing tool or should they be disassembled and greased? Your input is appreciated, as always. Thank you.

That "grease tool" will only get grease to the inner bearing, not the outer. IMO it's a waste of time and effort.

When you had the halfshafts off was a good time to check the spindle for smooth rotation and suitable end play (a little wheel wobble similar to properly adjusted front wheel bearings.)

If you loose sleep over the issue, the best course of action is to disassemble, inspect, replace bearings as required, and properly assemble them with new seals, proper end play, and a full synthetic disk brake wheel bearing grease, and they should be good for another 20-40 years.

      Joe------

Assuming that you want to drive the car, you want absolutely no uncertainty regarding the rear wheel bearings. Failure on the road will leave you with a HUGE problem. Any doubts, ask Mike Heidebrecht. He can fill you in.

So, if you have any doubts about your rear wheel bearings, have them serviced.
