    961 block casting

Hello, I have recently purchased a 1966 convertible. It has been sitting since 1981. It has the vin stamped on the transmission so I believe the transmission to be original. The dash cluster has LD on the back and it has the 80lb oil gage, rear sway bar and caps instead of straps for the rear universals. The person I bought it from said it is an original big block car and the above metioned items lead me to believe it is. It is not restored. It is however missing the original engine. It has a vin number under 3600 and was built in October '65. The owners manual has a hand written note saying the engine was replaced at 54,000 miles. I have found a 961 block and heads with Sept casting dates. Can I recreate the "correct" engine with this casting? Many articles I read say early cars before vin 4100 use this casting before switching to the 942 casting however the NCRS juding book makes no mention of the 961 casting. Thank you in advance for your help.
