Re: This Is OK To Read...

Hot rod mag says there's no substitute for cubes? Fine! I rest my case! The sophistication, class, subtility, and taste of this magazine goes hand-in-hand with bb thinking. Remember how they title articles? "Blowing your Blower", "Breaking the Brakes", etc. A fine magazine for high-school harry and the pursuit of aftermarket components (usually chromed). Drag racing is a wonderful and highly technical activity with considerable merit but what's it got to do with Corvettes? We are out for sports car fun not straight line accereration. Our cars turn left and right. (and sometimes in circles) Hopefully, we will have attractive, well porportioned, precise street machines that are a thrill to drive and tour.

          CRATE ENGINES RULE!!!

          Jer,

Dodge? Dast ist eine Deutscher auto, yah? Und Viper, also.

But Jerry, I have to drag you back to the original topic of this thread; converting a small block car to an old design big block is not a stellar (oops, sorry), er, GOOD idea. You can drop in a modern technology, factory hot-rod, ballerina-on-steriods small block right off the General's shelves for a little more than a good rebuild. You would be crazy to poke around swap meets all year to try and find the LONG list of the antique bits and pieces it would take to do the "operation", while maxing out your Visa (don't leave home without it).

Meantime, with the General's lady, your handling and steering would still be light and agile (there I go again) as you went out hunting big block scalps(excluding those bad 502s, of course). And, don't forget freedom from worry about overheating. Shoot, you could probably even have air conditioning. Hee, Hee

Speaking of changing the subject, did you see yesterday where those "mechanics" in New Jersey put that Continental Airlines jet right through the terminal wall. Guess they forgot to set the parking brake. Hee, Hee It looked like "Shades of the Silver Streak". Appeared the plane wasn't even scratched, but then we could only see the part that hadn't passed through the wall.

Fade to black, with Roy and Dale singing "Happy Trails to You, Until we meet again".

              Rat Motors

Actually, the solid lifter (all the good internals) big block motors will survive 6500 or 7000 RPM as well or better than the small blocks. They are "over-square" enough (bore to stroke ratio) that the rod/crank loadings are no higher than the stressed small blocks. They were MADE to run that way. I have never been nervous about high RPM on my Chev big blocks. My old Pontiac long stroke motors were a different thing... BIG RAT motors Forever!

Re: HAIL TO THE KING BIG BLOCK.........

I'm lovin' this thread! I was away from the computer yesterday, so I am just now catching up. Those mousey little guys - the nerve! George, Jerry, we have to stick together b/c the mice outnumber us...

Dale, as soon as I pick up my '61, the first thing I'm gonna do is install a Rat motor into that Bowtie car! KIDDING! I hate to admit it, but I will be finally getting a small block, to go along with two big blocks. The thing I always liked about my L89, was the fact that those aluminum heads bring the big block weight down to only 1.3 times the weight of a small block. Add AC to that small block and they get even closer...

                  12 STEP PROGRAM

I'm in therapy to rid myself of this discussion board addiction! Really, it takes too much time.

Seriously however, I've been at Mars regional (damned good met), judged cars, camped out with number 2 son at local campground, went to Boston with same, another campground, decided that camping was not my cup of tea due to the smell of 150 cesspools mixed with 150 unbathed poorly dressed, rude, drunken retirees and ner-do-wells all grilling franks and hamburgers at the same time. Also decided that number 2 son was gross indiscretion in the first place so I rented a car to get home. Sadie, my 100 lb bloodhound, was pissed as well! Chewed up three dogs on the trip. So now I'm back in Redneckville, where I have defenses such as a shower, vintage french wine, classical guitar music, gently stirred martinis and of course this GD computer, which is killing me! I'm getting ready to go to Indianapolis chapter meet this weekend.

The shrink recommends a budget of time on the computer which will gradually lessen until tolerable, similar to a diet. Well for those of you who know me you know that a diet is a nighttime hallucination. I probably ought to put the whole friggin computer system on eBay; a fitting way to rid myself of the curse!

So that's where I been! I'm going to Bloomington to teach 61-62 restoration in the Workshops and then spend the rest of my second mortgage money on parts! Gee I wish NCRS Nationals were closer to the end of Bloomington. Three free weeks to answer a few boxes of slow mail, a memory full of e-mails, and ship $11,000.00 in parts is just too much time!

I'm coming down with the Noland Adams syndrome. (uncurable) I've forgotten the subject of this response.

                    CAT POWERED 1961

I'm getting a 1961 Duntov candidate 98.3 point NCRS Corvette myself! I plan on installing a Cat 1693TA 425hp diesel. Makes 1675 lb-ft of torque at 1300 rpm! That'll go along with big block thinking. Maybe we can have a "friendly" race sometime.

                      WHAT?

I wouldn't be interested in a 65 OR a 67 in the first place and certainly NOT one of those gas guzzling, low rpm, heavyweight boat anchor engines!

                            I Feel Your Pain

                            Dale,

Nice visual picture you painted there; I can almost see it. A campground near Baston with no showers? Whoa... and they probably thought you were the hillbilly.

My wife has been gently, but persistently, pointing out my addiction to NDB. She knows we own an old Corvette, and after nine years, she is dang well ready to ride in it again. She wants progress on the car NOW, and I will continue to drop out some during the prime daytime hours to work on the car. But, when Jerry Clark throws down the big block gauntlet; well, honor demands response.

But, you, how can you even think of dumping your computer and NDB? Your irreverent wit (member numbers, black hats), deliberately misleading opinions (stainless is good), techno-engineering babble about nothing (ballast resistor is a computer ), and deep abiding passion for Corvettes is an essential part of the NDB character. How could we ever do without it?
