I have a 60 that I want a restoration correct battery and a 59 that I need a recomendation on the current delco replacement that will fit the battery tray. I need some help on my choices, the delco just needs to fit and give good service, but the restoration battery, is more confusing. I was reading in the driveline that there are 2 choices 1 with acid and 1 without, which is the best for judging? Thanks for anyone helpp.

Re: 59 and 60 battery needs,
I just bought the one witout acid for my 1960 from Restoration Battery. He said both batteries should judge the same. The sealed battery however is about $100.00 more. I was out of money so I bought the one where I had to add the acid. It is working fine. Lost 7 points at this weeks national because of the appearance of the top. It looks like shiny plastic.- Top

Re: 59 and 60 battery needs,
I have a repoduction battery made 10 years ago, which is in my 59. That battery has finally bit the dust. At a regional level I never lost any points. I understand that battery is no longer made?? My only choice I guess is the current repo, which isn't as good as the older repo?- Top

Re: 59 and 60 battery needs,
Don't throw away the case! If you look hard enough, long enough, you'll find a good ole boy out there experienced in the days of melting & pouring away the original tar, pulling the battery's internal plates and rebuilding it for you.- Top

Re: 59 and 60 battery needs,
How would the Delco Maintainance Free Battery Paragon sells for $259.00 (plus $10.00 to date it) judge?

It should judge just like the book says...
Crack open your copy of the NCRS Judging Reference Manual, turn to Section 4, Standard Deductions, Rule 2, Batteries and read:
"No Originality deduction: original or original design reproduction (indiscernible as installed) Belco as described in judging manual with, if applicable, appropriate plant and date stamp for the vehicle.
Table of Originality Deductions:
Deduct 10% -- Battery appearing as above but with no appropriate plant or date stamping, if applicable.
Deduct 30% -- Reproductions differing from original design and construction in minor detail.
Deduct 50% -- Delco, correctly sized, service replacement with appropriate top or side post configuration.
Deduct 100% -- Originality and Condition for others."
Sounds like the Delco Maintenance Free Battery is going to fall into the 50% category, doesn't it?- Top

Re: It should judge just like the book says...
I was thinking it would be only a 30% deduction as a reproduction "differing from original design and construction in minor detail", especially because they will date stamp it for you, and it comes with the model 2SMR53 and cat. no. 458 designations, along with correct caps.- Top
