    63 SWC windshield

Just had my new (3rd unit) windshield installed. First one was the incorrect unit, tinted, with a dark green tinted shade stripe across the top. What an ugly W/S that was.(For a classic Corvette). Would have looked good on a Hot Rod. Returned it to Vendor for credit, but I paid shipping both ways.
2nd unit from a different Vendor was correct, clear, but would not fit. Vendor send another unit, which looked at first as the same size, shape and curvature, but turned out to be slightly smaller .
Had a local installer put it in today (I had to supply the bedding compound).
The W/S was slightly different on both upper corners and across the top, from the other one.
I had to grind the area on the suround frame, where the clips seat, in order to get it in.
I guess, during the last attempt to install the W/S, some of the clips did not seat against the inside edge and prevented the proper seating of the seal/glass.
After grinding the clip seats in (5) places, of the (20) clips, we mussled the thing in place. Took about 4 hours total, with me assisting...
The seals from Corvette Rubber fit and look perfect.
Anybody contemplating to install glass on a 63 or similar year should definatetly use an experienced installer, as least for the windshield.
It took a lot of tweeking and pounding, even for the prof. installer... I did the rear myself two weeks ago, was easy, but it was the original glass.
I am surprised, how few glass installers do not know how to install vintage glass.
At the place, where my installer works, a small shop in suburben Detroit, Mi, some of the installers don't even know what the rope is used for, as he was telling me...
Anyway, the thing is in, looks good and waiting for the reveal molding (being polished)
    On to the interior...

"some of the installers don't even know what the rope is used for"

Doesn't surprise me... Since Shark era, windshields have laid on the windshield frame vs. being 'pulled' inside the frame surrounded by a gasket. You're expecting the installers to have experience with pre mid-60's cars and that's a TALL order today!

You're actually lucky the shop agreed to do the install for you. Most simply ask classic Corvette owners to take their work to a specialty shop...

I know what you mean about having problems with the windshield, rubber, and using an experienced installer. I have a 1963 SWC also.

I ordered my original reproduction date-coded windshield from Glassworks. The first one came in with a flaw right smack in the middle of the driver's line of site. My body man luckily saw it before he attempted to install it. After many attempts to get a digital picture of the flaw for the good people of Glassworks, they sent me a new windshield. (I don't think we ever got a good picture.)

Trying to get the correct rubber from Corvette Rubber was also a challenge and to find the clips around the window from a vendor. I found out the hard way that the convertible rubber is different than the coupe.

My body man consulted two expert glass people before correctly installing the glass. He didn't have to grind anything down but the previous person that restored the car squirted all this "black gunk" around the window probably to stop a water leak. That was not fun cleaning that out.

One of the compliments I got from my appraiser was the on the glass.

It pays to spend the extra time and do it right.

        Re: 63 SWC windshield

I guess, I am not alone, to run into problems with certain items, such as aftermarket vintage restoration parts or services.
I also found a small flaw on my newly installed windshield.( small..)
At the lower, driver side of the W/S, just at the edge of the W/S gasket, the glass looks odd, sort of not flat. Fortunately, the spot is small, only 1/4" out by 3/4" long. My installer said, it is caused by the lamination between the (2) sheets of glass "sucking" in during manufacturing , mainly at the edge.
It's hardly noticeable, when the reflection hits the W/S in a cetain way. But still, another glitch...
But otherwise, the car looks so much better with glass installed.
