    1969 L-36 starter

    Hello all:
I"ve just pulled the starter from my L36 and have a part number 1107355. I checked the archives and this part is called out for 1967 (or thereabouts)Pontiac. My question is thus: Is the 7355 considered "high torque" in the sense it will perform as satisfactorily as the 1108400 or 1008414 original equipment? The starter is also stamped "rebuilt". Is it the case or the internals ( or the combination) that determines the torque output or capability? I am also searching for an original correct part number, but if its more than the case that determines the starter capacity/capability, what else do I need to confirm on a new acquired "correct" part number?
    Thank and regards...Joe

the "hi torque" starters have the power lead going into the field case about 1" from the end of the case where the standard starter the power lead go into the field case at the very end of the case if i remember correctly. CRS not NCRS has set in lately.

      Joe -

If there's a 3/4"-long spacer between the bottom terminal on the solenoid and the brass terminal that protrudes from the armature case, it's a "high-torque" starter. If there's no spacer and the protruding armature terminal attaches directly to the bottom terminal on the solenoid, it's a "standard" starter.

Thank-you Gentlemen. It is the high torque version. Can I infer that its the longer case and/or a longer armature that supplies the extra torque?...Thanks again...Regards...Joe PS..Pictures MAY follow...jt

              Joe-----

The length of the starter frame (or, "case" as you refer to it) is the same for both standard and high torque starters. The difference is in the field coils and armature length. These differences are internal to the starter and cannot be seen. The external difference is the location of the field coil terminal which requires the spacer to connect to the solenoid.

                Re: 1969 L-36 starter

Thanks, Joe. In my long departed past, I can remember (re)building starters from a couple of donors to make a single working unit. Basically, I will have to disassemble the unit to see if the armature length is correct. The field coils were almost never replaced outside of a rebuild shop, and mostly not even then. That guy would just find a frame on his junk pile that had a close enough configuration to fit the application and mate the armature assembly from one to the frame from another. I think this answers all my questions. Once again, thanks to all and deepest regards...joe
