I'm looking for a replacement air filter element for a 1965 dual snorkel air filter and was surprised to find that it wasn't that easy. Just looking for a modern filter, not the original foam. The NAPA cross referenced part is 1/4" too high for the housing. I checked the back of two other filter mfg's catalogs and couldn't come up with a match to the right size. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: replacement air filter element for dual snorke
Jim------
The original air cleaner elements for 63-65 (except FI) were a foam sponge material that was supported by a "wire mesh". I do not think that these elements have been available through GM for quite some time.
The current GM/Delco replacement is GM #6484339 or AC A165C. I believe that this is a paper element-type filter, but, in any event, it is the one that GM has used to service the 63-65 application for at least the past 30 years. It is still available and carries a current GM list price of $7.73.
If you wish, Dr. Rebuild, and I'm sure many others, carries exact replacements for the original filter. These cost about $30, if I recall correctly. If it were me, I'd use the GM #6484339, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

More confusion?
We had a thread on this a few months ago. The AC A353C is a properly fitting paper type element that is available through the Delco distribution channel. Someone ordered the listed part from Chevrolet(had to buy 6) and they were paper. The A163C (not to be confused with the A165C, which is the 63-65 foam FI filter) is not listed in the Delco Catalog, but appears to be identical to the A353C if memory serves me correctly. Based on that prior thread, I question whether the original foam element was EVER available from GMPD, but repros are currently out there. There was a consensus that the paper element is probably a better filiter for driving, but the repro foam and screen is the way to go for judging.

The GM replacement is A353C, but I had to buy six of them as that is the way they are packed. You might be able to get just one from an ACDelco dealer. If you want one of mine, let me know, as I have a more than a life time supply Ken- Top
