    installing piston rings

Can anybody give me the proper location of ring gap on piston? My Sealed Power set for '61 230hp only shows views of oil ring. I need the location of first and second ring in relation to the oil ring. Thanks

    Hi Paul

All I know is that each rings gap has to be 180 degrees from each other.

90 to 180 degree stagger will work Paul. It's not all that exacting a science when it comes to this, but you just don't want them staggered too close.

Make sure you feeler gauge the ring end gap in the cylinder bores as well if you haven't done so already.

        Paul,
Typically the top ring gap will be oriented at the top of the piston, as far away from the sparkplug as possible. The second ring gap will be oriented 180 degrees from the top ring gap.

An excerpt from the Chevrolet Overhaul Manual shows ring end gap positions:

Now, do yall think that those gaps stay where you put them or do they walk around. I cant imagine that they stay there.

There's no way that they remain as originally set. However, I always set them as GM specifies, anyway. It's not that hard to do and, the way I figure it, it might not be beneficial but it can't be detrimental.

And, be aware that "End Gap" is critical to service life. Al W.
