    Electrical Gremlin Still Alive

Don't know if anyone will see this as so much time has passed. I have checked the dash harness connections, cleaned all contacts, added a little diaelectric grease and checked that off the list. Removed the little green ground cable shut off cleaned everything and put it all back together. Went back under the dash again and removed the plastic connector from the ignition harness plugged the wires directly into the switch. Checked the distributor plate ground wire, that is good. And I still have an intermittent issue, drove the car about 15 minutes it quit and would not restart. Five minutes later it startted again and I drove it 15 minutes back home. On the way back home it skipped once, radio continued to have power, I guess that is some kind of clue. I am going out to change the condensor now and wanted to post a thank you to all.

      George,

Take a test light with you and stay close to home, when the car quits see if there is power at the ballast resistor wire or positive side of coil. This test will tell you if the problem is from the harness/ignition switch or somewhere else. Then post here and someone will help trouble shoot.

Timothy, thank you, sounds like a great idea. I changed out the condensor today, ended up completly stripping the distributor, painting the housing, repacking the grease well replaced the plastic seal washer and felt washer, changed the points while I was there. Will test drive again tomorrow.

When you say it wouldn't start for 15 minutes, do you mean it would crank but not fire or that it would not crank?

Two very different things to troubleshoot. What is the car? I may have missed an original post.

            Re: Electrical Gremlin Is Dead

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions and assitance. I finally got to run the car, both yesterday and today and the problem is gone. I drove the car for about an hour and half on Friday afternoon, and another hour today, it never skipped a beat.

I believe it was the condensor. What a long drawn out hassle this has been. I guess it proves again, check the simple stuff first.

            Thanks again to all,

            George

George, NOS condensers are on there last leg it seems. The fiber round board at the end of them has lets moisture get into the condenser and that's the end of them. AS I mentioned before my friend tested 35 NOS DR's and only about a dozen were any good. I remember the old Model A Ford days when you didn't leave home without a spare condenser. Glad you are back on the road. John

                Now on to the FI

                John,
Hi, can't believe how much time I wasted on the ignition swith connections, and harnesses. Go for the simple stuff first, likea condenser. Now I can get back to the FI unit, I have attempted to add some photo's, we will see if it works. Talk to you soon,

                Thank you,
                George
