    67 jack painting??

I have a 67 jack that I want to recondition for judging. Is it ok to sandblast and paint the whole assembly black or should I dissassemble it and keep certain parts bare steel? I plan on haveing it flight judged with the 67 in which condition points were lost the last time.

Not all of the jack is painted. The screw part, the two cad washers and the plastic washer are not painted. The end nut of the screw is painted. I think the paint is gloss black, but you'll have to check the JG to verify that.

    Hope this helps.

If you can find an original jack to look at it would be an advantage. While it may not apply to C2s, at least some C3 jacks have more than one shade of black on the various parts.

        Bill,

Don't sandblast it, you will ruin the surface finish. Wire brush the rust, strip it with lacquer thinner and abasive pads, finish off with very fine sandpaper. Carefully mask off the unpainted parts, spray paint with gloss black. No need to diassemble, but you will have to do multiple coats in different jack positions to get it even.

This is a 67 jack. The original paint was not fully stripped, just sandpapered to a smooth finish.

I have an original, unrestored jack and the paint coverage is as Tony suggests. Judging from the appearance of the original paint, it was quite glossy when new.

Bill, As Rob said the jack was pretty glossy. AT least semi-gloss for sure. I had a NOS 65 style jack for many many years and it was pretty glossy.AT least semi-gloss. I have a NOS C3 jack and was looking at it yesterday for another post and that jack is semi gloss for sure. Been wrapped in plastic since late 70's.
Another tip. The Acme threaded rod. Some of the rod does have some paint on it. Don't know how much but say at least 4 or so inches of it. Jorjorian taught me this. John
