    461 X Heads ?????

I have been researching the use of the 461X head for the 1961 315HP engine. I would like to confirm casting dates with the end head symbols (double hump, double hump with flat tops and rectangle symbols). The dates I am interested in are form August 1960 to August 1962. Pictures with dates for documentation would be appreciated, but all information is welcome.

    Please email:

ray63@rochester.rr.com or post on forum and I will cut and paste.

    Thanks for any information!

      Hi! Joe

Yes, Sorry! that I did not acknowledge that I received it. It is hard to read and I need to down load it into a file that I can enhance the picture or quality of print.
I have some old Motor Tend magazines and looked through them , but they were for the 58 and 59 Corvette model year.

Thanks for the article, and if you would like any information that I collect your are welcome to it.

        Re: 461 X Heads ?????

these heads were one time in great demand by stock and super stock drag racers because of the larger port volume. after NHRA allowed these racers to port and polish other heads to the 461X port volume these heads fell out of favor. up till then these heads brought BIG $$$.

          Hi! Clem

What I am looking to do is document the progression of the head from the beginning in 1960 (1961 model year) to mid 1962. I believe that the first 61 head had a rectangular symbol (I have only seen one of these and it was on a 57 chevy not a Corvette and the engine was not original to the car. I also failed to get the casting numbers) on the end of the head followed by the first double hump symbol with the top of the humps flattened, followed by a typical rounded top double hump symbol. I would like to create a time line with pictures of dates and symbols.

          Thanks for any help!

              Ray--
The sequence you have is correct. Generally after January of 62 the flattened hump disappeared, but there are occasionally heads as late as May with a flattened hump. Very early 61 were simply rectangular. 61# 002 had the rectangles.

                Hi! Mike

The 61 JG states that some exceptions for the dates on round top double hump 461X head have been observed? I guess what I am trying to do is to determine a time line, and learn about the early 461X heads at the same time. I had a good talk with Joe Lucia in reference to castings, casting dates and casting numbers at the Nationals. When a new casting was used, you normally will see the new casting and old casting used until the old casting part is phased out, or dual usage. The chances of seeing a late casting (higher casting number) showing up with in an early casting run would be slim at best.

Joe L.; If I am wrong on the information I posted, please correct me! Thanks for the information and I wished I would have had more time to talk.

Clem, I missed most of the muscle car era as a youngster. Viet Nam, marriage, children and college for the children. Now it is time for me to learn and have fun. Keep the information coming.

                Thanks to all!!

Thanks to all, just trying to learn and have fun!

                  muscle cars

the muscle car era is still here get a new corvette even better a new ZO-6. these corvettes put the 60s muscle cars to shame. the dealers are discounting the ZO-6s up to $6K because the big money men looking for a new corvette are waiting for the supercharged one. my dealer has 2 allotments for Z0-6s but no customers and he can not get my new 2008 C-6 coupe because of constraints on the paint and wheels. go figure GM has cars for people who do not want them and no cars for people waiting to buy. if mine does not come thru in august i am going to wait till spring to order because the corvette will just set in the garage till spring here in PA and i will be making payments and paying insurance and can not drive it.

                    Sounds generally correct to me.
