    Engine block weight

    What does a bare engine block casting weigh (283, no crank, no heads, just the block)? thanks!

      Jim,

      A complete 283 is 575lbs, I think the bare block will be almost 300.

          Uh... I think a bare SBC block is closer to the range of 150-175 pounds; 30 years ago I could lift one single handedly, but I don't think I'd try that, today.

                  Just happened to be weighing 283 & 327 bare blocks for my own shipping information and they were all in the 158 - 160 Lb. range.

                      Thanks to all, 160#? I can put that in the trunk of the 61, or pass floor of the 70 if I had to I was thinking about one of thoes small motorcycle pull behinds for the car, small and low and can carry about 200# (that's a full cooler and a keg on the way to Carlisle, and and engine block and an empty on the way home!!! )
