I have an early 62, 250hp 3-speed. It has the 3191s carb. During a recent weekend ride I experienced problems with idol and running hotter than usual. Upon returning home I found the butterfly plate frozen vertical. I then disassembled the choke to find the piston frozen in the choke base. Once I removed the disc and spring, I found the inside of the choke cover loaded with soot and the gasket in small pieces. I could easily see that the gasket between the disc and cover was subjected to high temps. I assumed that my problem was a small leak in the choke tube that passes through the rt. exhaust manifold. When I removed the tube I found no rust or holes. The tube was replaced with a new one and the choke was cleaned up. I reassembled everything and fired it up only to have the same thing happen all over. How else can exhaust soot get in the choke? Isn't that a closed system? Also, where can I find the gasket that goes between the choke cover and the disc w/spring? I sure am puzzed. The car runs fine without the choke hooked up. Thanks in advance! Jon

Look at the other end of the tube where the fresh air is being pulled in. It may have oil/gas vapors coming into the tube. The oil or gas vapors combine with the hot air in the choke and make the carbon and/or soot you see.
Your problem used to be very common when everything on the road had a hot air choke. Cleaning the choke and lubing it was just part of a good tune-up.

Thanks Mike. I never did pull the hose that attaches to the air horn and runs to the clean air tube. Nor did I run anything through the clean air tube to check for deposits. Its worth a try. I'm so frustrated. I should disassemble the piston from the choke base to clean it thoroughly.. How do they come apart? Thanks again! Jon- Top

Bingo Mike! The clean air tube and hose was loaded with soot. I never checked it, thinking it had to be the choke tube through the exhaust manifold. Where do I look next? What would you suggest that I use to clean the hose and clean air tube out with? Guess I will have to clean it out like a gun barrel. Pull the disc out of the choke housing. Behind it, you'll see a screw holding the choke piston linkage. Remove the screw, take the linkage off and pull the piston out. Clean the piston and use a bore brush to clean the choke bore.
Just as importantly, make sure you're getting vacuum to the piston bore. It's common for the passage to be stopped up. It just takes a little further dis-assembly to clean it out.

Thanks Mike! I will clean it out thoroughly tomorrow. as well as the passage.. I have found venders with the choke cover gasket, but I haven't found anyone with the gasket between the spring disc and the cover. I guess I'll make one. I still can't find the source of my soot. The 250hp does not have the heat slot in the intake. Maybe my distributer is off or frozen. Maybe I'm too rich. But, it runs beautiful without the choke or the clean air tube hooked up. Still puzzled! I had better clean up the rubber horn tube, clean air tube and bottom choke tube again. I'll try carb cleaner and shoe strings. I'm still frustrate since I can not find the source and Carlisle is coming up. Thanks for your help! I'm a little disappointed that nobody else has responded. Sure do appreciate your help! Jon- Top

source of soot still unknown
I cleaned everthing up and developed the same problem upon starting the vehicle. Maybe bad gas, dirt stuck in the kneedle, I can't seem to find the source of the soot. But, I am becomming an expert at choke cleaning and reassembly.Still puzzled! Jon- Top
