Have a few questions about refinishing a slightly damaged grille. I have the post for formulating the gray paint, but does the paint cover all the egg crate and just the thin, outermost flat surface remain chrome? Or does the chrome return in to the step up in the casting (about a 1/8")? Can a slight crack/break at the uppermost outer edge(near the screw hole) be repaired? Lastly, the 2 platers I've used in the past have gone the way of pollution control. Any platers in the New Jersey area? Thanks, Dennis #33752

Re: 70 FRONT GRILLE
Dennis,
My recollection is that the chrome is "supposed" to go back to the little step you described. What you have to remember is these things were chromed and then painted, probably with a mask, under production conditions. The dividing line between the chrome and the paint may be a little more vague than you might expect. For you to get even as sharp a division line as the factory, is going to require mucho work masking with teeny pieces of masking tape, and I have been contemplating it myself (I have a '70 coupe). I think someone on NDB suggested spraying the grille from behind without masking, but I haven't decided how I will actually do the painting.
If Terry McManmon is on NDB tonight, he will be able to give you the straight scoop.
Platers...I had a piece of pot metal trim repaired and replated, but it was years ago. Probably one of those guys you said went out of business.
