    Painting my 71 coupe

Should the car be gel-coated? Then primered? It is going to be war bonnet yellow by the way. Thanks for any info!

Love that color, that was the most popular color for 71. Well they sold more that color than others that year. It was named after a race track in Oklahoma

I don't suggest gel coating, the original panels weren't.

      Primer, then paint.

Would gel coat only if body needs it. I assume you are stripping the current paint off. At that point you/your painter can evaluate condition of panels.

Warbonnet Raceway was just north of Mannford, Ok and was very active during the 1960's and early 70's. I was interested but couldn't afford to race so I started working at the track. Best job I had was pit steward; close to the action, around the pit crew and drivers and close to the cars. Sports car races, but best of all was the big time Trans Am races. Smokey Eunick, Mark Donahue, Roger Penske cars.

You can still drive around Warbonnet today. It is a potholed street lined with mobile homes.....I can still hear the scream of 302 engines turning 8000 RPM. Maybe that is why I cannot hear today.

Our chapter had a quality painter into our meeting to run a paint seminar and one of the things he stressed was that you always apply gel coat if you want the paint to last with a minimal amount of problems.
