Help !!! I am trying to align the head light door on my 1966 coupe. I am preparing the body for paint and I want to make sure I can reinstall the door and properly align it after it is painted. It will be painted off the vehicle. I have looked in the assembly manual and have found different gap spec's than what is published in the repair manual. I took a look in the archives and was unable to locate any information. I think I need work on my search process in the archives but that is for another time. What I have run into is that the front leading edge of the door doesn't seem to align with the body. Now I realize this might also be part of my body prep when blocking the body. I am looking for that unwriten procedure that every one knows about but no one can find in writing any where. If any body has any secrets for this process let me know. Thank you all in advance for your help and the time you took to read this long winded request for help.

Re: 1966 head light door alignment
David,
A couple of things. First, make sure you have the core support and support rods installed when trying to align the headlamp buckets. The weight of the front end left unsupported will significantly affect the alignment. As far as adjustment, the mounting holes in the end plates are slotted which allows adjustment of the buckets.- Top

Re: 1966 head light door alignment
Paint the headlite openings and door jambs and hood surround first. Then hang the doors, buckets and hood on the body. If you paint in pieces you can have a color variation in the parts ESPECIALLY with the metallic colors. I have a Marina Blue car that needed to be completely prepped and repainted because it was done in pieces the first go around. Professional painter was amazed that it didn't match AND had to "eat" the costs of paint for the second application.- Top

The above comments about paint variation really show up under flourescent lights, as do other imperfections.- Top

Re: 1966 head light door alignment
Did't think about color changes. That is a good idea. I was hoping to improve the quality of my paint job and how the end product looks but, now that you have made me think about color change I might have to rethink this process. My Car is mossport green and if you have ever seen this color it can be tricky because of the metalic. Thanks!!- Top
