1964 engine bay fender, sidewall & firewall insul

I have a 1964 coupe. I'm currently restoring the engine bay area. When I first got the car about a year ago, there was some fiberglass like (yellowish) insulation that at some point was attached to the areas of the engine bay fender, sidewall & firewall area. Most of it had dislodged from the wall and was sitting in a lump on the splash shield. I intitally thought that this was a homemade attempt to redude cabin heat. Since it was unsightly I removed it. Later I was reading one of Adam Nolans books (page 194) and it mentioned some sort of factory insulation in this area.

    Questions:

Was there in fact some sort of factory insulation in this area on a 1964 coupe (vin #XXX818)?

Does anybody have any pictures they can share with me?

Is there anybody selling reproduction insulation?

Also, on the same page of Nolans book it mentions that the 1964 model year had "New special insulation between carpet and fiberglass panels in the front and rear compartment of the Sport Coupe body". Was there insulation under the carpet in 1964 coupes? Mine does not currently have any insulation and I believe that the carpet is original (supposedly 75,000 miles on car)

    Thanks,

    Patrick

    Patrick,

Maybe a mouse nest. Check your seat buns for missing foam. Check your firewall insulation, and carpet underlayment for missing material that the critters may have used for their engineering project.

Not mice, unless they know how to use glue. There is still a little fiberglass attached to the firewall and I just looked at it again. It looks like it was glued on. The glue looks like rubber cement in color and appearance. The fiberglass appears not to have any backing on it, contrary to Nolans book description. The book says only the first 3,600 1964 corvettes had this insulation according to his survey, which would include my car.

        Hi Patrick,
Just no longer surprised at the odd ball things one finds on 63/64. Now if your car had the insulating blankets on it and assuming Noland is correct on the attachment method then look for some holes for the "pointed plastic push-in retainers" If you find remains of these holes then you may have had the blankets.

Note; I'm assuming the push-in made a hole in glass.

Pat I have seen this on a 64 before and its

real! One of the guys in my chapter had a fuel car with this insulation on the engine fire wall. I havent seen him in a long time. His name was Nick Ziccardi he lives or lived in Fort Salonga N.Y 11768. Thats a 631 area code. If you cant find him, I'll help. Phil 8063
