    license plate frame

How do you tell a original 1963-1970 license plate frame from a later GM over the counter frame. Patent # on the spring clips, aluminum or stainless rivets, size of rivets, I have seen three diffrent styles...Thanks in advance John

    John,
The rivets are different on the originals but the presence of patent numbers on the clips best indicate an original to me.

      Re: license plate frame

I am relying on memory here so be careful. When I was looking for the stainless license frame I found repros and ones still available from GM. That was five years ago. I looked at a known original, took a photo of it with me to the local Chevy dealer and looked at theirs. The GM unit was outrageously expensive when compared to the repro (maybe $50+ for the GM unit and $15+ for the repro???). However, there was a significant difference in the appearance of the rivet, with the GM unit having a much smaller rivet. I don't recall whether or not the frame was the same but they did have easily detectable differences. I wound up buying the GM piece and it has done well in judging.
