When testing my flashing (Lights) in my dash, I turned on headlights and closed the headlight buckets. The light came on then went out. After about 10 seconds the light came on then went out. This is sporadic. I thought the flashing was all the time till you turned off the headlights or opened the buckets, Right? I realize that the 2 limit switches control this operation. What in this circuit performs this flashing? What could possibly be my problem? Any ideas appreciated. Thanks DG

The lamp (GE #257) is a special 'blinker' bulb. The filament has a bi-metal construction such that current flow creates heating causing the filament to heat/open/cool/close and blink all by itself. -

Dick,
The GE #257 bulbs in this application are flashing bulbs, so the flashing occures because of the heat within the bulb opening and closing the circuit. Someone will describe better, if you can comfirm power at that socket then I would suspect incorrect/bad bulb.Comment

Remember this is to be checked at full system voltage, so make sure the battery is up, also check the system grounds.Bill Clupper #618Comment

Thanks for the replies. I now believe it is the bulb. This bulb is probably The worst to remove/install. The battery is new. Grounds are good. The light comes on bright then goes out then in about 10-15 seconds comes on then off again. The bulb must go and it will suck. Any tips on changing? Standing on ones head is preferred. Finding room for my hands to squeeze through the tight openings is challenging. Popping the bulb out is not bad, but getting the lampholder snapped back into its respective hole is the tough one. My bulb flashes slow at best, some times it takes awhile to start it's first flash then it is not a regular blink. Like they said above a heat up and release filament can be affected by outside temp and sitting for awhile, till it heats up to spec. How long do we really leave the buckets down anyway this bulb function is probably only used for NCRS judging most people pull the light and push the up switch before it even flashes once. I understand what your looking for but don't be disappointed if it still flashes slow after replacement.

Mine on a 67 flashes slow like yours and is a 257 foreign jobber. But it flashes.
You really need to get contorted to reach up behind the dash to change it, but it can be done.
I've got a GE 257 from Tim above, which I might try some day to see if it makes any difference in the flashing rate.
Let us know the results, after you get back from the chiropractor.

Dick, Not trying to be an echo and repeat info that others have given but listen to what Bill Clupper said. You need the real deal- the old GE 257 for the correct action. For the correct timing of the flash. Those el cheepos will fail you on ops and PV for sure. Maybe email Clupper for some other info on this bulb as he is the one that helped us out. JohnComment

How fast is too slow?

Just checked my flash speed. Started off with 8-9 on flashes per minute with the engine on. Then after a few minutes it slowed to about 7 on flashes per minute. Wondering if this would meet PV judge standards?
