When was the service TI Amp discontinued?

    Hello,

I recently came into posession of a "NOS" T.I. Amplifier, part #1115343.
Being an Electronics guy, I opened it up to snoop around a little.
Looking at the on board transistors, I saw what I think were date codes.
    The Output PNP (TR1)is a Motorola 1049, 5956, 5F15. I am guessing the 5F15 is date, June of 85?

    TR2 is marked "G" 1960584, 8919.
Is this maybe 19th week of 1989?

    And last, the TR3 is "G" 1960643, 9020.
    Maybe 20th week 1990.

I searched some online data sheets, and found a 2N5956 which is a mid power PNP that maybe an equivlant to the TR1 output Transistor, but the 2N5956 is shown as silicon, not the old Germanium.

Anybody know when the Amps were discontinued? Were they ever upgraded to the Silicon Transistors?

    Thanks much,

    Bob

      TI Amp reproductions being made?

      Thanks Clem for your response.

I've been researching this over the past day, I have seen that Crane Corvette is offering a repro of the early T.I. Amp. Looking at my T.I. Amp, it's condition and what I believe are the date codes on the transistors, I now suspect the unit I have is a repro, which doesn't really bother me too much, other than it being sold as NOS.

If it is a repop, I would hope that the transistors have been upgraded to silicon.

      Anybody able to confirm this?

      Bob

the reproduction board i have seen are a sealed unit. you can not see the components they use. send me your email and i will scan you what i have as far as replacement parts that were available outside of GM when i was still rebuilding the amps. we put the good GM parts on a curve tracer and found after market transistors that matched but they were still germanium

There are some supposedly NOS 1115005 and 1115343 boxes still available. The only difference in the two was the connector.

Clem, did you ever try to repair one that the box was full of bedding compound?? I picked up about 20 of the 005 boxes from the NASCAR teams that were around here years ago. Over 3/4 of them were full of the GE bedding compound and the only thing you could save was the housing and cover, if you tried hard.

Bob, Look in "The Driveline" for TI Specialities. He can upgrade the boxes with transistors. John

Clem the boxes that Jr. Johnson was using in the 80's had the bedding compound in them. I was like a semi hard rubber or silicone used to shield components from vibration. I thought that covering everything in the box level with the bottom cover should cause it to overheat. I dunno. I just know that I trashed a lot of what should have been repairable boxes because of that crap.

You should buy the M & H drop in electronics and fix the boxes, selling one or two at a time. Don't flood the market.

gasoline will dissolve silicone if you wait long enough.MEK methyl ethyl ketone will dissolve most other potting compounds. we used it to get into potted electronic devices to see what was in them so they could be repaired and not have to buy a new one.
