i'd pull the fan shroud and radiator(it'll go without removing the radiator but why risk lacerating the radiator with the front of the engine). the shifter linkage will have to be removed prior to installation. good luck, mike

Unless your dealing with a Caddy Eldorado engine bay that you could fit a Volkswagon in, I would definatley pull the radiator and shroud.

Trying to stuff the tranny tail stock over the tranny crossmember and still miss the firewall and floor boards with the shifter attached will be a real chore. Best to install it later.

Might be a good idea to keep an eye on the distributor clearance to the fire wall during the installation as well.

Hope it slides right in for you.

There is a great book out there, How To Rebuild Your SB Chevy, that gives lots of "how to" advice on pulling the engine. Most of the info is applicable to Corvettes. It is well worth the few bucks that it costs to get the piece of mind that comes from a step-by-step procedure. The book is available at bigger stores like Barnes and Noble, etc

As suggested, pulling the radiator is very cheap insurance and gives a lot more room.

Remove the radiator, but leave the support in. It's the only thing supporting all the front end bodywork.

Install the shift linkage after the engine/trans is in place.

Pull the distributor first - gives you more room to maneuver, and you won't damage it.
