    Frame / Chassis Paint

What's a good (easy to get) paint recommandation for the frame / chassis of a C3? All my honey-do's are done, time to get back to the important things in life!

    Re: Frame / Chassis Paint

Marty, there is no simple, one-product answer to your question.

Gloss levels on the frame, suspension, and other chassis components vary. The gloss on the C3 frame is closest to rattle-can satin, maybe slightly glossier; front and rear control arms are slighly glossier than spray can semi-gloss. Home store spray cans typically are not a good solution for exacting Corvette restoration.

For a professional quality restoration, the best approach is to select the paint material you want to use from your favorite auto paint store, then flatten to provide the gloss level appropriate for the different components. Acrylic enamel has been a favorite chassis paint in the past, but I will probably use single-stage acrylic urethane in black; it's more expensive, but you don't have to worry about stocking another set of catalysts, reducers, etc. PPG's acrylic urethane is called Concept, or DCC; this material contains isocyanates and must be sprayed in a booth with fresh air breathing equipment and protective clothing.

Now that I've overwhelmed you by unintentionally moving restoration out of the hobbyists' hands , maybe someone else can offer rattle can alternatives that are closest to gloss levels you need. Otherwise, you'll need to learn and understand gloss levels, and where each is used, then make your own rattle-can choices based on experimentation. Gloss levels had some variation anyway; I'm not sure that the slight difference will be penalized on the judging field.

      Hey you
Why not try to stop the guess work. And answering the same ? weekly.
In the JM why not say the closest we have gotten is DuPont Chassis black.
The paint comes in 1 gallon can and ready to paint.

Same as the color for shocks. Pick a DuPont color, put it in the book.
Point the sheep in the right direction.
Don't want to give a name.

        Denny,

There are several reasons product names are not used in the TIM&JG, but the greatest reason is that product specifications change over the years and what is a good product five years ago may not be available now. And what about five years from now?

Remember too folks seem to use what is written in the TIM&JG that they have -- never mind that the manual they own has been changed twice since they bought it.

NCRS does NOT endorse products. Even with that said vendors sometimes will advertise "approved by NCRS" or "for NCRS judging use....." What do you suppose will happen if NCRS does mention products in the manual?

          Well, Denny...I Dunno...

Maybe it's because the TIM&JG is about providing generic information about the cars, and not providing a "recipe" for restoration. We have to leave some problems for the students to solve to keep their attention.

Anyway, can you imagine the disputes that would develop between TDB "experts" if the TIM&JG starting naming products? Mark has a member number, and he's dang well entitled to best possible answer...I save my "throw down" answers for non-members. (Only kidding, and you know it.) If members keep asking the question, it's because they don't know the answer...got to help them.

Your premise is also faulty; the problem is that a single product, out of single can is INCORRECT for judging purposes. I know Eastwood has a "chassis black", and Quanta has several, and DuPont may even have a "chassis black" on the shelf. If they do, it's cheap stuff aimed at commercial body shops; for making blacked-out areas look new beside fresh body work. That doesn't mean that Judge Spongebob won't deduct for it bigtime on the judging field.

If Mark doesn't want to deal with professional level products because of lack of experience and spray equipment/facilities, the Quanta rattle-can line may be an easy alternative, but I would never automatically ASS-U-ME that the gloss level is correct. JMHO obtained from experience.

Generic is to head scrachy and open

              Re: Well, Denny...I Dunno...

Actually, the UAW didn't decide what finishing products were used.

The part finishes would have been specified by engineers on manufacturing drawings, and then perhaps, with enough latitude for the supplier to make a specific choice inside those narrow boundries to deliver the lowest cost product. Ain't the free-market, capitalistic system great?...And, that's why there IS NOT ONE UNIFORM GLOSS LEVEL; the parts were supplied by different manufacturers all independently exercising their (limited) freedom of choice.

"Generic" makes you THINK...If you're thinking, you can restore...If someone's feeding you answers, then you are a robot executing someone else's knowledge. I suppose it's all about the "destination" or the "journey" question...I prefer to enjoy the scenery.
