Re: Engine Block Protection while in Storage

I have a bare engine block - no pistons, cylinder heads, etc., that is being stored on an engine stand. Is there anything I need to coat the cylinder bores or any other part of the block to help preserve it? Engine oil, or ?

I expect to store it like this for about 2 years in my hot and often humid garage.

    Thanks,

I recommend you coat all machined surfaces with CJ-4 oil. Go to a HD truck supplier and get a quart of SAE 40 since it will have less tendency to flow down that the commonly available 15W-40. Use a paint brush to spread it on the surfaces - not dripping wet, but just like if you were actually painting it with enamel.

Then cover it with a garbage bag but don't completely seal it so some air can circulate, and check it after a couple of months, then every few months if it's doing okay.

High humidity is not necessarily a big problem, but condensing humidity can be. Any water droplets that form on uncoated iron in condensing humidity conditions will form minor rust spots.

You might also want to go to a marine store and get a can of spray storage oil for the internal passages. I comes with a straw and sprays a fog of oil that will stick to the surfaces.

I am able to buy Fogging Oil at Advance Auto. No need to go out of your wary to purchase it.
