High winds and thunderstorms moving through central and eastern Pennsylvania knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers, brought down trees and branches and ripped through a Carlisle car show, injuring at least 18 people.
Carlisle police said power to much of the town was knocked out as trees and power lines were knocked down and transformers blew when the storm hit shortly before 7:30 p.m. Dispatcher Brent Killinger said part of the roof of one apartment complex blew off.
At the Corvette of Carlisle car show, a tree fell on one of the cars leaving the fairground, trapping the occupant inside. Cumberland County spokesman John Bruetsch said he was taken to Carlisle Regional Medical Center, where his condition was not immediately available.
Five other people were also taken to hospitals and a dozen treated at the fairground.
Carlisle Mayor Kirk Wilson said the county's special police emergency response team had been called in to help. "It's really hard to get a handle on the damage right now," Wilson said.
