If you need a 1970 dated block can a 1980 with the right month be substituded. If the block was decked then there will be no build numbers. Are there any other markings of differenced between a 1970 & 1980 with the same casting part number from the same assembly plant?

1970 and 1980 both had a casting number of 3970010. In 1970 the casting date was a letter for the month followed by 1-2 numbers for the day and a single number for the year. In the case of the 1970 the final number is 0 indicating it was a 1970. Was there a different proceedure in 1980 for the casting date? I have a 1970 block with a casting date of C 4 0. March 4, 1970. What woukd the casting date for MArch 4 1980 be?

I believe the stamp pad is a different configuration for the 1980 cylinder case. 1980 pad is almost square -- 1970 pad is abotu twice a long as it is wide. I believe there are other configuration differences as well, but since judging involves looking at the pad.....
