    # of original key's for a 64

    Hi all,

Could someone please tell me the number of original keys provided a new owner when vehicle was purchased? I have one numbered one and one non-numbered one for my car but both appear to be aged the same. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Craig

    Re: # of original key's for a 64; 2 identical keys

    Craig,

For '64 each owner received two identical, octagonal keys from the dealer. Both keys came with knockouts in place, stamped with the same 4-digit key code. The owner's manual instructed the owner to remove the knockouts. Some owners did just that and some didn't. If you have a key with the knockout in place, but with no key code, then that key is not original. If the wear seems appropriate for the age of the car, it probably means an owner got a replacement key back in the 60's.

Gary, Good job. You would have thought though that the other key guy would have chirped in. Guess he is too busy selling plugs.

If you mean stamping code numbers...

            Craig,

There are several people around the country who can stamp the code numbers into the knockout. The person I recommend is our fellow DB poster, Pete Lindahl. His prices are reasonable and the font size and style of his stamps match the OEM closely. Pete can be reached at: pclindahl@comcast.net

Try Pat's Locks LTD. He is in Fallston, MD at 410-897-9647. I just sent him the 4 digit key code and a check, quick turn-around.

In 2004 he charged me $28.00 + $2.00 shipping for 4 keys, cut and stamped for my 63.

              I think that's a great price at $7.00 a key

In my opinion, Jesser's is an EXCELLENT source for locks and keys. But, expect to pay 'going market' rates....

                    Jack, as I recall that's about $45.00 a key?

                        Jesser; too expensive

The last time I checked, Jesser was asking $60 per key. Not worth it in my opinion.

                          Market rates for key stamping

                          Jack,

Jesser's rates for key stamping are on the order of 5x higher than what Pat Kraus or Pete Lindahl charges. The only explanation for why people choose Jesser that I can think of, is because Jesser advertises and the others don't. Pat K. and Pete L. do excellent work and at what I would call fair prices.

Re: Market rates for key stamping

I agree with Gary. I looked at Jesser and felt like I needed a second mortgage and decided to pass. The points per dollar just weren't there. Then, someone pointed out Pete Lindahl and not only were his services relatively inexpensive but his turn around time was quick.

                              You can't see 'body English'....

in a typed message. The reference to 'market price' was a tongue in cheek reply to Craig telling him he will get correct parts from Jessers and to be prepared to bend over on price.
