    Delco Y89 Battery Usage C3?

I have a Delco Y89 battery (E-3000 series) battery that came with my '72 coupe. It's still in the original box. I know this isn't correct for a 72 corvette, but was it ever used for other years of corvette? If not used in corvettes, what was it used in? Just curious....

    Steve-----

I don't think that the Y-89 (E-3000) series battery was used in PRODUCTION for any Corvettes. In fact, I don't think that it was used in PRODUCTION for any GM vehicle, but I'm less sure of that. I think that it was a SERVICE-only, replacement battery. However, it is VERY similar in configuration to the PRODUCTION batteries used from late 1969 to 1972.

Steve, Here is little info on Delco's introduction. Not the Y89,but it does describe the E3000. It might be a good idea to contact Tom at Restoration Batteries, he's a great help. It seems to me that it also would have been an over the counter replacement, Tom can verify I'm sure.

"Delco introduced the Energizer line of batteries in 1967 which consisted of three series: the "top of the line" Red E-5000, the "normal" Yellow E-3000, and the "economy minded" Green E-1000. The color was used on the caps and to highlight some of the text on the battery. Each series had incrementally more internal lead plates per cell which yielded a higher battery capacity.
The part number of these new batteries was a combination of the color of the series it was in and the last two digits of the former three digit Delco part number. For example, the R69 was in the Red series and was formerly Delco part number 569."

Early '69 Z/28s used a Y55 top post battery, but Chevy went to a side post Y77 in February. A few months later this was replaced by the Y89

        Thanks guys.

I kinda figured it was service part of some sort.

I'll contact Restoration Battery and pick their brain too....I bought a battery from them last weekend at Carlisle.

        Thanks Again,
        Steve
