Below is a picture of my differential case. Does anyone know if the bottom number is a date code? I have a date correct carrier and pinion gear and solid clutches, which I believe ended in 1970. The case has the correct part number for a 1970 3 series, but the bottom number doesn't match. At first I thought it was a date code for February 7, 1975, but there isn't enough room in the tag for a two digit day. Could it be a date code in a different format, or is it something entirely different. Thanks in advance.

Re: 1970 Differential Case Question
Tom -- I strongly suspect it is a Julian date, as I've yet to see one higher than 365 (or 366 in leap year). Your 3-series Eaton positraction case would be early September, but of what year ? I have 3 with dates 183, 258, and 353; two that I figure are original to carrier then translate into 2 to 4 months prior to carrier cast date and even more to differential assembly.
If someone could identify the model year that they switched to the later style (big window) posi cases (3-series) ED 32297 PW; (4-series) EDB 32298, that would narrow it down. I kinda think it was around 1969- Top
