C1 Welding Clutch Pivot Bracket to Frame

Need to weld a Clutch Pivot Bracket to the frame. Anyone have guiding measurements using the clutch return spring bracket as a frame of reference. The assembly manual has some measurements but I can't interpret them. As a last resort, will have to find a C1 and measure myself but thought possibly someone has already done this. Thanks. Richard

    Richard -

Rather than trying to interpret and use the dimensions in the assembly manual, it's easier to install the clutch cross shaft to the bracket and over the stud on the engine block, and position the bracket fore-aft on top of the frame until the axis of the cross shaft is exactly perpendicular to the centerline of the engine; chalk-mark the outline of the base of the bracket on the frame, remove the bracket and shaft, and weld the bracket to the frame.

John, After marking frame as you describe...

... would you pull the engine to weld it - or do you think you could do the job well with the engine in place...??? Just curious... Probably also need to weld the Godzilla spring attachment in place (used or not) if one is trying to duplicate an OEM man tran install... DC

And, possibly, lose the A/T evidence...

... Or maybe, I'm thinking passenger car A/T evidence... Never owned an A/T Corvette, and trying to keep it that way... Best, Dennis

Dennis, I used to love El Caminos. Drove my share of them for many years until they started making them out of the country. Anyhow I remember when my one beater had a broken Clutch pivot bracket. Bought a new one from Chevy and it wasn't easy to install if I recall. In fact I bought two and one is still floating around the junk here.

                Dennis -

I did mine with the engine in the frame, body off the car. Bubba P.O. had replaced the pivot stud on the frame bracket with some goober part from a hardware store and buggered-up the top end of the bracket with big gobs of stick-weld, so I just cut it off the frame and replaced it with a new one.

John, Thank you for your reply. The engine is currently out of the car. I thought it would be easier to weld the unit now, thus the thought of the measurement strategy. Richard
