    69 fuel filter leak

This weekend, I installed a new fuel pump. I also purchased a new correct fuel filter and correct SS fuel lines. On the line from top of the fuel filter to the carb, at the fuel filter threaded connection, I can not get the fitting tight enough to not leak fuel.

I'm going work on it again later today and I'm looking for any helpful suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Don

Don, search the archives for stainless steel and you will find several lengthy threads on the problems with SS lines and how to cure them. Clem has posted quite a few good cures

Dick...Thanks, it looks like a specialized locktite is about the only option before I take it to a corvette shop and let an expert handle it....Don

        Don:
I don't know if the experts will think this a good idea but I have installed fuel safe o-rings in the area that receives the fuel line and have completely eliminated any leaks in my '69 with stainless lines. I also could not get rid of leaks and tried this fix many years ago and have been very satisfied.

My memory fails me somewhat but there was a copper washer mentioned in one of those threads also

Forget the Locktite; it won't help you, at all. Fuel (and brake) fittings do not seal at the threads. The threads serve only to compress the flare on the tubing into the seat on the female fitting. The problem with stainless steel is that it's very hard and much less "conformable" than TBW tubing.

I'm a BIG TIME "stainless steel guy". I like stainless steel better than gold. However, with one exception, I won't use it for fuel lines or brake lines for exactly the reason that you've found. The exception? The frame fuel line between the tank and the pump. That line uses rubber fuel hose at both ends for most Corvette applications, so the stainless material causes no problems.

Generally, TBW fuel lines have very limited tendency to corrosion damage, either externally or internally. So, there's really not a lot to be gained by using stainless steel in this application considering the other problems it can cause. Plus, if one replaces lines with TBW now, the chances are great that one won't live long enough to need to do it again.
