    FI hot driving problems

    Hi all, is super hot here on the left coast now, much to the displeasure of my 64 FI. Yesterday was out enjoying 90+ heat and the usual restart after a sitting a few minutes was very erratic. Today I filled her up with our cruddy 91 octane Shell and added 18 ozs of Kemco Octane Supreme 130 and drove for awhile, stopped for some items at Trader Joe's, and she started and ran fine. In 75 degree weather no problems with the Shell gas etc. I also have heat insulation wrap from the pump to filter and up to the fuel bowl. The gas out here is very bad in hot weather, runs better when out of state etc. Any more ideas besides avgas?

    Wonder if that Max Lead 2000 works?

    The stuff that's advertised in the Driveline. Says it is supposed to boost the boiling point of gas 60 degrees, and have the engine run 12 to 30 degrees cooler. Any comments?

    Any other additives for hot weather driving?

      Hi Jerry, haven't tried Max lead 2000 yet. I do add about 3 quarts of Water Wetter in the radiator and never go above 180 even in very hot weather, everything can help! The Kemco doesn't mention raising gas boiling point but it must.

          Hi Alan, took the car out again, it's 97 now, ran fine in traffic and freeway, got good and warmed up, only change was the additive, but had to use 18 ozs. of it, not cheap stuff. I've talked to John D. about this several times, might just depend on the car and FI unit I guess, but always searching for more ideas. I love searching the Forum for hints, wish we had it 30 years ago!!!!

            During the recent stretch of 85 - 92 Degrees here in Beautiful Flint, Michigan, the Birthplace of our favorite automobile, and I had no problem after about 10 - 15 seconds after initial start. It takes about that long to idle and baby the pedal, until the cooler gas reaches the system. The secret - 5 - 6 gal. of Av Gas, 100LL, and the balance 93 Shell.

              Hi Dan, The situation is getting worse. The gas is boiling at lower temps. When it's in the 90's you are in deep trouble. Dennis Clark once had a good solution. He said to put the hood up in the attic. The cars start really nice then. AS we know it's a combo of the heat and crap gas.
              Be careful with the av gas though. The more you cut it the less effective it is.
              One fellow said if you slice it thinner than 50% it is not effective at all.
              I get tired talking about the subject as I don't know anymore than any of you. Have to remember we are talking about antique equipment. Fi's that are extremely primitive compared to the electronic stuff of today. Clem Z said it better than anyone (hate to admit that).Clem said that the auto industry has spent millions of dollars to correct this problem on todays vehicles. We can't expect our 50 year old cars are going to compete with the modern technology of today.
              I doubt that we are ever able going to be able to fix this problem.
              Now add the corn fuel and fuel that boils at a lower point and we are in deep trouble.
              A lot of us remember Dale Pearman in his 62 black Corvette Zaroom. Those of you that saw his engine compartment were amazed of what all Dale did to combat the heat problem with his FI. Yes it was rather crued and ugly but it sure did work. He insulated the crap out of everything. The spider was wrapped with this God awful green stuff. But the car ran and ran good in hot weather. Sorry but I have no more to add as the subject wears me out.
              In 90 degree weather I would park the car and drive an AC car anyhow. I had my AC on 68 all day yesterday on a 10 hr ride in the GMC. I was still not comfortable. Can't imagine riding in a midyear coupe with FI. I doubt if I would survive. John

                Thanks John, sad but true, guess we'll all become fair weather drivers or something. Wish they would move the National Convention to October or April! Then us FI guys could do less sputtering.

                  Hi Dan, I will see what I can do to have the events moved. It would be much easier though for you to move closer to the events.
                  Thought of you yesterday. Saw a 55 Chevy coming down the highway with a big jimmy blower sticking up and no hood. Bet he had no starting problems. Yea listen to Dipstick and take the hoods off. Old Fi's will run great then. Have fun, John
