C2 Console Repair

Trying to get a bit of advise on repairing my worn down/tired looking console. Several of the parts vendors sell a complete console repair kit but I am uncertain what's invloved with these kits. Do you simply remove the shifter area and replace or is there cutting involved? Any help here s appreciated.

I've used one, you have the peel off shifter indicator and aluminum plates from console. I had to peel up one end and used 3M adhesive remover and scrapper to get them off. You also have to pop off the 2 rivets holding the small bracket/knob from ash door tray and can't remember if the kit had new rivits or I just used small screws.

Depending on console chrome condition, you can replate them if you can find someone willing to do pot metal. I did light dusting of dye for color.

On the ash tray door, judges will look for repair - so if the door aluminum is good or even fair, keep it. Or find a way to make it look original from the back side also.

Do NOT remove rivets or peened tabs that hold the ashtray door in place... rather inspect and bend straight the small tabs that keep the door captive in the slides. After removal and refurbish you can reinstall and bend the tabs back. I refurbished the door using steel wool. Came out looking great.
