68 Front Rotor & Hub Runout

On installing a new set of front rotors with the original hubs, one is right on for runout, and the other one was out over .014. On swapping sides, I found that the rotor is okay. I then put the dial indicator on the outer edge of the hub, and this is where the .014 out-of-whack is coming from. I checked my main nut for bearing loseness, and all is fine there. In calling Stainless Steel Brakes Corp., I find they don't make/sell the taper shims anymore.

Does anyone still sell those? Or, do I have to get a new or used hub. If I need a new hub, can/should I just have my old bearing races pressed out and use them with the old, good-looking bearings or should I just use new races and new bearings?

Any ideas on where to get inexpensive new hubs?

    Thanks,

The shims that SS brakes used to sell are not the solution to your problem. You need a new hub. It is false economy to try to reuse the old bearings or races. Go for new there too. The little added cost is cheap for the peace of mind it will buy.

    Just my 2¢.

Can't you bolt the rotor to the hub then take it down to have it turned? I may be wrong, but it sounds like you put it on right outta the box. I did my front brakes that way and had no problem.

Don, Take the hub to your local parts store that turns rotors, have them drive out the studs and true up the face of the hub [like a rotor, only one side]. Reinstall the studs and put the hub back on the car, check for runnout - should be OK! Been there before!!!!

Don, Rob is right on with his solution. I've been there and done that too! Much cheaper than a new hub (which may have the same problem, anyway).

            Brandon & Rob:

Thanks for both your like suggestions. A friend of mine owns a brake & muffler shop and this cleared up the problem.

            Thanks again,

            Don
