    Exhaust Bolt question

Posting this on behalf of new member RPOL36 who just joined NCRS and asked me to post his question:
"Hi, I just joined the board and I own a 68 convertible 427/390 4sp built D07. The exhaust manifold bolt kit from Paragon matches some of the ones I took off which I assume are original since they match the head mark Paragon said was correct.

However, the stud bolt on the drivers side is different from what I took off the car. My question is which is correct? the old one I took off or the plain stud one Paragon sent me in the kit.. I attached a pic to this post: the top/rusty one is what I took off, the one below it is from Paragon. Which one is correct?

PS: this car is a power steering car I think that relates to what type bolt was used here according to Paragon. Also, where on the drivers side does this one go? I think its the first bolt from the front on the drivers side, correct?

    thanks!"

I believe that the old stud is the correct one

            Dick,
I had the same one on my smallblock and that is why I also thought it was the correct one but didn't know if maybe the big block motors used different studs.

I vote for the old one with the flange.

                  Kurt,

I also went through the same thing. I have the same picture! The shouldered one is the original from my 71 LS5. I used 15 Paragon bolts and put the original stud back in (with some antiseize).

Run a NEW 3/8-16 nut BY HAND down the threads (long end) of BOTH studs and tell me how it goes with each.

                      Addendum

                      Kurt-----

Also, you can and should thoroughly wire brush the threads of the old stud prior to running the nut down BY HAND. However, DO NOT run a die, thread-cutting or thread cleaning, on the threads.

                          Re: Addendum

Hey, I'm the owner of the 68 with this question kurt was nice enough to post it since I wasn't able to get signed on here but I finally got the profile working!

Ok so sounds like the one I took off is correct...I cleaned it up and plan to re-use it where does it go I think it is the first bolt back from the front of the engine right?

the other bolts in the kit match what I think are originals I took off the double circle hex heads.

I also am still a little un sure about what I should do about lock washers, french locks, or no washers etc.. I'm not sure what is correct.

I want to go the correct route on that also and this is for a D07 build date 68 4sp 427/390 if any of that info is needed..

I was told the bolts could be locking bolts??

                          thanks!

No, not at all. I'm just trying to confirm if it's an original stud. More info on that after we find out the answer to the question I posed.
