Re: Bidders gone wild again ?!!?
I saw the same thing, and shared your worries about shill bidding.
I now think the asterisk thing is an ebay creation. I bid on something last night (and lost). I checked the bidder info, and realized that ebay had changed my bid name to an asterisk name. Thus, ebay itself is creating the asterisk bidder names.
I guess ebay is taking even more steps to keep the bidder info anonymous.

Re: Bidders gone wild again ?!!?
The D**K is something E-bay is doing to hid the ID's of the bidder's to further protect against 2nd chance offers and someone with the same type of item offering it outside E-bay. I also think it KEEPS DOWN the number of complaints E-bay has to deal with about shill bidding as the people watching no longer know what the bidders real names are making, it impossible for any to know who bid on what, how may times and how often the same person shows a 'interest' or bids in the sellers other item's he offers over a course of time (his buddy). All bidder's get this kind of ID now when bidding. If you look at the end of the auction it shows the real winner's ID only. The bidders still look like D**K. I do not think E-bay cares about shill bidding and it happens at every classic tractor auction I go to. Bottom line for E-bay is money and the fact shill bidding is hard to prove and enforce with so many people and places across the world. I have gone to auctions for 30 years and never seen a case of bid padding brought up.- Top

Re: Bidders gone wild again ?!!?
larry i agree with what you say, as i've been in the auction business for 40 years myself and shill bidding is normal in the auction business, not mentioned to be expected and accepted. why it became an issue on ebay is because of the lack of auction education on ebays part when it started up---phil
ps, ebay should make paypal mandatory and if a seller does'nt want to pay the paypal percentage he can post that the percentage cost will be incurred by the purchaser---this would help clean up the bad sellers and streamline arbitrations JMHO---phil- Top

Adding to TC's post, Google Uniform Commercial Code UCC and go to section 2-238 that deals with auctions. It has been adopted by every state but LA. In NC auctioneers can and have been reprimanded or suspended for knowlingly allowing shill bidding.Dick Whittington- Top
