    3 SPEED ON A 1966

Hi guys....please advise how rare a 3 speed is on a 1966 corvette and if it is a negative or a rare find (positive). also if I wanted to change it to a 4 speed, where would I find a 4 speed and approximately how much would it be at today's going rate? thank you very much for your help. Marc -

564 of 27,720 '66 Corvettes (2%) were built with the standard 3-speed transmission. The Muncie 4-speed is a straight bolt-in installation, requiring a 4-speed shifter and linkage and shift pattern plate on the console.

Marc, I'm not a Corvette trader, but my opinion is the three speed is less valuable than a similarly equipped car with a four speed, in spite of it's scarcity. At least that's the way I would analyze the purchase...it wouldn't be an appreciable difference, and the difference could easily disappear when other factors are considered.

The reason the three speed would be less valuable is the desireability of the four speed transmission...that's the reason the production numbers for the three speed is miniscule compared to the four speed, and I doubt that forty something years has had much effect on the buyer's reasoning.

Having said that, if you swap in a four speed as your preference, keep all the original parts you remove with the idea of converting it back before sale...the car with it's original three speed transmission will be worth a lot more to a collector than the same car with a replacement four speed transmission.

        A few small points

You'll need a few other minor items shown in your AIM, section M20 M21 M22, like different speedo cable, firewall grommet, clip and plug, and a trans tunnel clip. The latter will require fiberglass hole to be filled/hidden when converting back to a "never-modified" 3-speed.

Should be able to find a "010" maincase Muncie without welded ears or cracked thread bosses for about $450 (as-is, you may luck out on engagement teeth wear, etc.) to $900 fresh rebuild.
