Hi all...

My tilt-tele column has had a ignition actuator sector gear failure. Are there any good resources out there for column rebuilding? Does anyone offer column rebuilding as a service?

Cracked the original on my '71 last year. You can do the R&R job yourself with the right tools + the handy dandy Chassis Service Manual. AND, Mr. Goodwrench is still alive/well in your-town-USA to do the job without pulling the column and sending it out....

If memory serves, there are still replacement parts in the GM system. I got one out of local dealer parts inventory in Denver...

... and from the other perspective,

using the CSM as well as other sources, you still won't find out some tricks you will need to do some of the repair work. After breaking two $45 hard-to-find switches I gave up and sent Dad's column out because the risk/reward ratio was declining rapidly.

The local Mr. Goodwrench ruined my friend's T&T column, and I would never, ever let them touch anything on my older Corvette.

Yes, the pivot pins are threaded and the special tool is often available off-the-shelf at major auto parts stores ($15-20) and can be ordered by any competent neighborhood auto parts store where the counterman is willing to flip through pages of his tool supplier catalog(s).... But, if you're a member of an NCRS chapter, you might be able to borrow the tool from a local 'brother' member!

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips! I was able to find an article online that had some real good pictures.... I pulled the pins with a screw, washer, socket, and claw hammer... they popped right out! Just needed to know how they were secured... A litter penetrating oil helped....

Now on to the rebuild... any tips on a "correct finish" black paint for all the parts that are exposed to the interior? Obviously is a semi gloss... recommendations on manufacture and color code appreciated!
